Forklift Hydraulic Pump: Selection Guide & OEM Replacement Options

A forklift hydraulic pump is the power source of the truck’s entire hydraulic system. Driven by the engine on internal-combustion forklifts or by an electric motor on battery-powered trucks, it converts mechanical energy into pressurized hydraulic oil that drives the lift cylinders, tilt cylinders, and power steering. Every lifting, lowering, and tilting movement of the mast depends on a correctly specified pump delivering stable flow and pressure.

What It Does

  • The pump draws hydraulic oil from the reservoir and delivers it at high pressure to the main control valve.
  • Flow rate determines how fast the forks lift and the mast tilts; pressure determines how much load can be handled.
  • Most forklifts use gear pumps for their compact size and reliability; some applications use vane or piston pumps.
  • The pump’s displacement (cc per revolution), combined with drive speed, sets the system’s rated flow in liters per minute.
  • A relief valve in the circuit protects the pump and system from overpressure.

How to Select the Right Hydraulic Pump

  • Match flow rate and pressure. Check the truck’s rated system pressure (bar/psi) and required flow (L/min); an undersized pump causes slow, weak lifting, while an oversized pump wastes energy and overheats the oil.
  • Confirm displacement and rotation direction. Displacement per revolution and clockwise/counterclockwise rotation must match the original pump and its drive arrangement.
  • Verify mounting flange and shaft. SAE mounting flanges, shaft diameter, spline count, and keyway dimensions must fit the engine or motor bell housing exactly.
  • Check inlet/outlet port sizes and orientation. Port threads and positions must align with the existing suction and pressure lines.
  • Use the OEM reference number. The OEM number is the fastest way to identify the correct replacement. Representative reference: Linde 335 master pump / sub-pump series.
  • Consider the truck type. Internal-combustion and electric forklifts use different drive interfaces and duty profiles.

Common Failure Signs

  • Lifting and tilting become noticeably slow even at normal engine or motor speed.
  • The pump emits whining or rattling noises, indicating cavitation or internal wear.
  • Hydraulic oil overheats quickly, or the oil shows metal particles and discoloration.
  • External oil leaks appear at the shaft seal or housing joints.
  • The mast drifts down under load, pointing to internal leakage and pressure loss.

A worn pump loses volumetric efficiency progressively; replacing it before complete failure avoids damage to valves, cylinders, and the drive motor.

OEM Cross-Reference Coverage

STARSAN manufactures hydraulic pump components cross-referenced to major forklift brands, including:
