A forklift brake slave cylinder, also called a wheel cylinder, is the hydraulic actuator mounted at each braked wheel of a forklift. It receives pressurized brake fluid from the master cylinder and converts that hydraulic pressure back into mechanical force, pushing the brake shoes or pads against the drum or disc to slow the wheel. Without correctly functioning slave cylinders, hydraulic pressure from the pedal never becomes stopping force at the wheels.
What It Does
- Each slave cylinder contains one or two pistons sealed inside a precision-machined bore.
- Incoming hydraulic pressure drives the pistons outward against the brake shoes or pads.
- Return springs retract the pistons when pressure is released, preventing brake drag.
- Slave cylinders are mounted on the axle backing plates and connected to the master cylinder by rigid lines or flexible hoses.
- Multi-wheel forklifts use matched sets; left and right cylinders are often mirror images and are not interchangeable.
How to Select the Right Slave Cylinder
- Match the forklift model, axle, and wheel position. Slave cylinders are side-specific on many trucks; confirm left-hand versus right-hand before ordering.
- Use the OEM reference number. Representative examples: Toyota 47530-U2100-71, Toyota 47520-32650-71, Hyster 5–7T slave cylinder, Hangcha 30HB slave pump, Heli three-point slave pump, Heli 25785-40601.
- Check bore diameter and piston count. Bore size must match the master cylinder’s output characteristics; single-piston and dual-piston designs serve different brake layouts.
- Verify mounting and line connections. Bolt spacing, bleeder screw position, and inlet thread must align with the backing plate and brake line.
- Replace in axle sets when practical. Replacing both sides together keeps braking balanced and avoids repeat downtime.
Common Failure Signs
- Brake fluid leaks or wet dust caps visible at the wheel ends.
- The forklift pulls to one side when braking, indicating uneven piston force.
- One wheel locks up prematurely while the other brakes weakly.
- The brake pedal feels normal but stopping power is reduced, pointing to seized pistons rather than a master cylinder fault.
- Corrosion or pitting on the piston bore, usually found during scheduled brake inspection.
Because slave cylinders live in the harshest environment of the brake system, exposed to dust, moisture, and heat at the wheel, they are among the most frequently replaced forklift brake components.
